Puerto Rican Music

Tony Vega is a renowned salsa singer and bandleader. Born July 13, 1957 in Salinas, Puerto Rico, he was awarded La Husca Award in Panama and in Puerto Rico won the Golden Agueybana Award for Best Orchestra of the Year . In 1992 Vega and his band performed in Spain, Chile, Colombia and the United States. He was also among a committee sent to Spain by the Government of Puerto Rico to represent the island when it was awarded the Prince of Austria’s Award .

Ednita is a latin/pop recording artist from Perto Rico that strated her career off back in the 1980s.

Gilberto Santo Rosa grew up in Puerto Rico and started recording music in the 80s and quickly rose to fame due to his unique style of salsa and Latin music. Many would classify it as music for television or telenovelas but it is very unique and very romantic.

We all know Ricky Martin from his early days as one of the best known teen music idols and they we all became familiar with him again after his smash 90s hit, Living La Vida Loca. Gilberto Santa Rosa, also known as the gentleman of Salsa or El Caballero de la Salsa is a singer of salsa and bolero. He was born in Puerto Rico in the city of Carolina.

Willie Colon is a Puerto Rican salsa icon and has been involved in the political movement of Puerto Rican immigrants for decades. He currently lives in New York and sings, writes and produces his own music.

Bomba, largely popularized by Rafael Cepeda and the rest of the Cepeda family is traditional Puerto Rican folk music. It has its roots in West Africa but is very well known and revered in Puerto Rico.

Tito Gomez is a well known Puerto Rican salsa musician who began his career at age 15 but didn’t go solo until about 1990 after he’d already made about seven albums.

Puerto Rican rock has greatly been influenced by American rock music with groups such as Alarma and Circo gaining commercial success.

Circo formed in 2001 with 5 members and have since been nominated for Latin Grammy Awards in 2002 and 2005. To date they have produced 4 albums.

David La Mole Ortiz is a native of Santurce, Puerto Rico and has been regarded as one of the most prolific and talented musicians of genre.
